If you’re not in a rush…don’t.
If you woke up late and have to get to work on time, we completely understand the need for speed. However, if you are not in a rush, easy does it. Accelerating quickly can cost you a lot in wasted fuel. In fact, you can burn an extra 10-40% more fuel by doing so. If you are not rushing, look ahead and see whether there is traffic or a red light – if you can anticipate a slowdown, coast your vehicle and save more money. Coasting your vehicle reduces wear on your brakes and uses less fuel! On the freeway? Reduce your speed! Every 5 mph you go above 50 mph is the equivalent of $0.21 per gallon in reduced fuel efficiency (assuming $3/gal.). Just remember to be courteous and stay our of the fast lane. As a bonus, turn on your cruise control so that you can maximize your fuel savings.
