We have the Tips and App you need to keep more of what you earn as a driver in the gig economy.
If you drive your own car for a living (e.g., for Uber, Lyft, Task Rabbit, Amazon Flex, Dominos, or Papa John’s), the best way to boost your take home pay is to reduce your vehicle operations and maintenance expenses. If you can drive those costs down from $.545/mile (the IRS estimate) to $.44/mile, for example, you can increase your take home pay by 20%. That’s a pretty good pay raise!
So how do you do it? We have answers:
If your car doesn’t require or recommend premium gasoline (high octane), then do not use it. It doesn’t do anything for your engine and is a waste of money. Even if premium is recommended, do not use it unless you can determine if it increases your fuel economy enough to offset the higher price when compared to regular octane gas.
If you plan on putting a lot of miles on your car, then paying a bit extra for “top tier” gasoline may be worth it. Top tier gasoline contains additives that reduce engine wear and tear.
Proper tire pressure improves vehicle safety, increases the lifespan of your tires (saving you money), and improves your fuel economy (saving you money). Check your tire pressure twice/month. If your car does not have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that displays individual tire pressure, you will need a simple and inexpensive gauge or an aftermarket TPMS. To inflate your tires, you can use a plug-in pump or a bicycle pump with a Schrader valve.
3. Install low rolling resistance tires.
When it is time to replace your current tires, install low rolling resistance tires (LRRTs). These tires are manufactured specifically to increase fuel economy by reducing rolling resistance.
We have dozens of recommendations for saving money every time you drive. But we recognize that it is hard to remember all the things you can do before, during, and after each drive to save money on vehicle operations and maintenance. So we designed the Driving2Save App to make it easy for drivers to save big, including potentially large savings on car insurance.
We are currently funding the development of the App on Indiegogo, and have raised almost $13,000 in our first two weeks. If you back our campaign, you will be making an investment in your financial future and get some awesome perks that could help you save even more on operations and maintenance costs (see below). Please check it out and back the campaign if you can.
This is really 4 tips for increasing your MPG without spending a penny:
• Don’t idle unnecessarily. This wastes enormous amounts of gas. If you must idle, turn off the AC.
• Don’t speed on the highway. Fuel economy plummets above 55 mph. (And speeding tickets further reduce your take home pay).
• Don’t drive with a roof rack on your car. The aerodynamic drag created by the rack ruins your fuel economy.
• Get the junk out of your trunk. Excess weight can reduce your fuel economy by 1% or more.
6. Get Aero.
If you drive a sedan or a Prius (or similarly shaped car), then you should install GasPods on your car. Our testing shows that these aftermarket aerodynamic enhancements substantially increase fuel economy. We like GasPods so much that we have them available as a perk for our backers on Indiegogo.
7. Go Waterless.
Waterless car wash is the fastest, most environmentally-friendly, and least expensive way to give your car a high-quality wash and wax. We have done the testing to prove it. We believe in waterless car wash so much that we have made our favorite products available as perks for our backers on Indiegogo.
These are just some of the many tips we have to help drivers save serious money. If you would like more, please check out our full list of Driving Tips and make an investment in your financial future by backing the development of our App on Indiegogo. Thanks for Driving2Save.
